A Seagull’s Dance with Storm Éowyn

In this first “photo of the week” post, I am sharing a photo I took last week, just after Storm Éowyn had passed. I headed out to a local beach here in West Cork (Long Strand for those that know the area) in the hope of finding some big waves.

The ocean was wild, but the light was very “flat”, so I wasn’t particularly hopeful. Also, with the lack of any interesting light and the driving rain sucking all colour out of the atmosphere, I knew I would be looking for black and white images.

After walking to the eastern end of the beach, I spotted seagulls in what looked like a dance with the waves. They were trying to fish (I’m guessing) between waves and negotiating the shore break and the masses of white water.

I am not a wildlife photographer at all, but I was quite fascinated by the scene and decided to take some photos of this dance between waves and birds.

I decided on the below photo for this first photo of the week, with one of the seagulls making off with whatever it managed to fish out of the stormy waters.

I thought it’s a nice memento of Storm Éowyn and of how another species experienced these wild conditions.
